What if I feel like I'm not doing enough?

Last checked

Almost every new homeschool parent feels like they are not doing enough, and feeling it does not mean you are failing. It usually means you care. A few small habits, realistic expectations, flexibility, and other parents to talk to, keep the doubt from taking over. You do not have to be a perfect teacher. You have to be a present parent who keeps showing up, and that is something you can absolutely do.

Is it normal to doubt myself?

Yes, extremely. Wondering whether you are doing enough is close to universal among homeschool parents, especially in the first year, and it tends to flare up when you compare your ordinary day to someone else's highlight reel online. Doubt is a sign you are paying attention, not proof you are doing it wrong.

What actually causes homeschool burnout?

The biggest cause is trying to recreate a full traditional school day at home, an artificial classroom, rigid hours, a worksheet for everything, and then feeling like a failure when it does not run smoothly(recovering from burnout). Holding yourself to an impossible "perfect homeschool mom" standard burns people out faster than the actual teaching does. Homeschooling does not have to look like school to work.

How do other parents handle it?

A few things come up again and again from experienced families(what to do about burnout):

How do I know my child is really learning?

Step back and look at the big picture instead of any single hard day. Is your child reading a bit more than a few months ago, asking questions, curious about the world? Then learning is happening, even when a lesson flops. If the worry is specifically about keeping pace with other kindergartners, that fear is common and worth reading on its own:falling behind.

Where can I find other South Bay parents?

Community is one of the strongest cures for self-doubt. A parent community for this site is not open yet, but you can sign up on thehome page to hear when it starts. In the meantime, co-ops, classes, and park days are a good way to meet other local families: seefriends and community andenrichment and classes near you.
